However, pay close attention to the price of the test when you shop. Tests at home are difficult to do in stores and online retailers. On sites like Amazon, for example, sellers sometimes raise prices when supply is low. As a result, the cost of each test can easily exceed $12 in certain cases.

You can still buy them for free if the price exceeds $12 per test, but know that you won’t get full compensation.

However, there is an exception: If your insurance company does not set up a program that allows you to get tests through preferred drugstores or retailers at no upfront cost to you, you will have to pay the full amount of the test, even if the cost exceeds $12.

CMS says, “For example, if an individual buys two packages for $34, and the plan or insurance company doesn’t set up a system to cover costs up front,” then the plan or insurer would have to pay $34 instead of $24.

Tests purchased before January 15th may not be covered.

New federal rules require health insurers to cover at-home COVID-19 tests only purchased on or after Saturday, January 15.

However, insurers can cover in-home tests purchased before then if they choose. If you have receipts for COVID-19 tests at home that you have already purchased, you should contact your insurance provider directly to see if they will cover the costs.
